Update: Wings of Their Own

Dear Friends:

Almost everywhere we go we meet people who say, "I'm so glad you are doing this!" We have been traveling around locally and have two major trips planned before serious editing begins.

Since the last update we have:

• Put in the application for funding to pass through Women Make Movies (Mary Scott's current distributor), and we've started sending out proposals to large companies to sponsor the project.

• Interviewed the first woman pilot hired by El Al Israeli Airlines.

• Interviewed more members of the Long Island Ninety-Nines and went flying with CFI Luz Beattie (Mary took the controls for a few minutes between shooting in the Cessna 152).

• Interviewed almost a dozen members of the WASP at the Women Military Aviators conference in Washington DC where we also met lots of current and former military fliers.

• Talked with Terry Queijo at her horse farm; she was the copilot on the first all woman flight on American Airlines with Beverley Bass, and she is also the "second Wright Brother" for the reenactment this coming December.

• Discussed the workshops and study that Linda Castner is doing in New Jersey about why more women DON'T fly and how different types of fear factor in to it.

• Taped Carole Cary-Hopson and her girls in Eagle Flight; a program in New Jersey to give City kids an alternate to the streets.

• Used two cameras at the air show in Old Rhinebeck - one on the ground & one in the air - and got some fabulous footage of vintage aircraft and pilots in costume. Mary even put on the goggles for a ride in an open cockpit biplane (once you know you CAN breathe in the wind, then it's really amazing!)

• Looked at, logged and captured some really wonderful footage that people have sent in like Capt. Nancy Aldrich in a 727 and a DC 10, air racers like Mardell Haskins, WASP footage, NASA footage of Eileen Collins, and testimonials from members of ISP.

• We have also made connections with terrific librarians and researchers at Texas Woman's University and at Wright State University so I can use a photo of Katharine Wright taking her first flight on February 12, 1909 among other unique and unpublished footage and photos.

We are now heading to California October 3-8 to interview Elinor Smith and Julie Clark, and to Texas October 11-15 to talk with Wally Funk and Beverley Bass among others. We almost finished the shooting, but we still need your HOME VIDEOS SO KEEP THEM COMING. Also anyone who want to tape a "shout out" - that's a short video of you near your plane so we can see most of the plane and you SHOUT " I'm (name) from (place) and I fly this (name of plane)"

Thanks again for your information and involvement. KEEP THOSE LEADS AND FOOTAGE COMING! Pass the word along to your friends about our work and stay in touch. We love hearing your news, too.

Mary Scott and Abby Dress
