From Kitty Hawk to Cape Canaveral, a few women have found "Wings of Their Own" ®

Why do women fly? Why do women make up only 6% of all pilots?

This is the theme of our latest documentary project "Wings of Their Own" ® the dramatic and inspiring story of women in aviation. So far the production has had fair skies all the way!

The production crew has interviewed over 150 women pilots, most of whom are Ninety-Nines, the renowned organization of women pilots founded by Faye Gillis Wells & Amelia Earhart in 1929, at Curtiss Field, Long Island. We have also worked with the Air Race Classic, Women in Aviation International, and Women Military Aviators.

These are women of distinction with fascinating stories to tell. Some are actual pioneers, who pursued aviation firsts, others are record holders, and many do it for fun or a career.

We also captured on tape several members of WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots). These are a select group of women who, during World War II, became the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft.

"Wings of Their Own" ® features winners of air competitions and the daring, incredible, adventurous women of NASA.

Our crew has been on location since June in Kitty Hawk, Space Camp, Rockefeller Center, Long Island and more. The documentary will also feature precious "home movies" of these courageous and unpretentious pilots, previously unseen by the general public.

Currently, we have produced a "trailer" for the documentary and are going on the road with it to secure corporate sponsorship to complete the production.

PLEASE CONTACT US if you would like to be a part of this production -- either because you have an interesting aviation story to tell or if you would like to become a sponsor.

Update #10: Wings of Their Own

Dear Friends:

Wings is NOW AVAILABLE on DVD!!

Holiday sales were pretty good, and at $24.95, it’s not a bad price for a feature documentary. We sold over 15% of the first edition DVDs and look to recoup more of the production costs this year.

Two very good things happened recently:

We received an endorsement for the film from the International Ninety-Nines. They put a link to our site on their site and will donate $3 of every sale to a Ninety-Nine or to anyone who asks me to support this group.

A BIG “THANK YOU!!!” to Jenny Beatty for facilitating this.

We also got the following great review in the January issue of School Library Journal

Wings of Their Own. DVD. color. 1:23 hrs. Make Believe TV. 2004, 2005 release.
ISBN 0-9770218-0-7. $24.95.

Gr 9 Up-This unique documentary provides a history of women's aviation in the 20th century. Through vintage black-and-white photographs and interviews with over 150 women pilots, film director Mary Scott chronicles how women (who have consistently held 6 percent of U.S. pilots' jobs) started in early aviation (Amelia Earhart, African-American aviation pioneer Bessie Coleman, the Ninety-Nines) and continue to blaze new trails in commercial aviation (Delta Airlines' Captain Terry London Rinehart), the armed forces (U.S. Air Force pilot Terry Van den Dolder), and race competition (pilot Julie Clark). The documentary also covers aviation history, such as the World War II-era WASP fliers (founded by Jackie Cochran) and the Mercury 13 women astronauts-in-training. The interviews and historical footage are not always in chronological order, but this doesn't impede the documentary's flow. It is easy to access commentary from individual women, but most viewers will be so intrigued that they will want to watch the entire film. The Web site, wingsoftheirown.com, contains the documentary production notes and an archive of all the women aviators featured in the film. Inspiring and historically fascinating, this film would be an important addition to school, public, and career libraries.-Larry Cooperman, Seminole High School, Sanford, FL

We hope that this will get the film into school libraries across the country to inspire a new generation to fly.

What you can do to help:

1. Contact your local public library and urge them to buy and show the film. There’s no extra charge for a public performance; just let me know where and when.

2. If you have a website, or are a member of women/aviation websites, ask them to please put a link to this site www.wingsoftheirown.com on theirs. The more people link to us, the easier we will be to find in searches.

3. Send e-mail to wings@makebelievetv.com with suggestions.
